Following a research project carried out by the Applied Mineralogy Laboratory of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Rústicos La Mancha makes soft paste bricks using waste materials: the covering layers of sand and clay from the company's clay quarry; and IGCC slag from the Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Power Plant owned by Elcogas, S.A. in Puertollano, Spain. IGCC slag consists of solid waste generated in burning coal and coke (grains of black glass with a granulometry between 0.1 and 10 mm, which act as a tempering agent). The use of slag saves water in the molding process and saves energy and waste gas emissions in firing, while the brick shrinks less during drying and firing. The bricks are available in sizes of 23 x 5/11 x 3.7/5/7 cm and 28 x 5/6.5/14 x 4.3 cm. They are not toxic and do not emit gases or cause allergies. They have good thermal and acoustical insulation properties, perform well against fire, have great compressive strength, resist frost and are durable. By using waste products, they make the use of new clay quarries unnecessary, saving natural raw materials.
The following types of brick are offered: rustic, handmade and handmade with a sand finish. Colors are red, white, salmon, brown, faded (destonifcado) and moss.
Sizes of face brick tiles: 23x3.7/5x1.5 cm and 27x4.3x1.5 cm. They are also supplied with a mesh backing.
Special pieces: cornices, parapet caps, corners, curves, stair treads, etc.
Use in a facade.
